Job Opportunity: SICU Registered Nurse

Location: Fredericksburg, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • Specialty: Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)
  • Patient types include trauma, cardiovascular surgery (e.g., TAVRs, CABGs), neurosurgery, and other complex surgical cases
  • Common diagnoses: acute ventilator needs, COVID+ with high oxygen demand, DKA, severe sepsis, unstable GI bleed, trauma, open heart recovery, post-code blue, multi-system organ failure, CRRT needs

Schedule & Work Details

  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2-3, adjusted based on skill level and patient acuity during float
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: Required within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block scheduling: Not accommodated
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Local candidates accepted
  • Return-to-office restrictions at manager’s discretion

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), with at least some experience within the last year
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (American Heart Association)
    • BLS (American Heart Association)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Education: Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Background checks including lifetime criminal, federal, state, and education verification (within 1 year prior to start)
  • Drug screening within 30 days prior to start (specific panels required)
  • Physical exam within 1 year prior to start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing and documentation, updated annually
  • TB testing or chest X-ray per facility requirements
  • Immunizations or immunity documentation for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
  • Flu vaccination documentation required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31) or approved medical/religious exemption
  • COVID vaccination documentation recommended but not required (declination accepted)
  • Employment application and work history verification (minimum 2 years)
  • References: Two required, including one current-year reference from a supervisor or equivalent who directly supervised the candidate (references from this facility or system are not accepted)
  • Facility-specific documents including code of conduct, confidentiality agreement, Epic experience screening, orientation packet, and job description acknowledgment
