SICU (St. John's ICU) Surgical ICU Nurse

Overview

• Travel contract for experienced Surgical ICU nurses
• Location: Carmichael, California
• Contract length: 14 weeks
• Shift: 12-hour days
• Hours per week: 36

Required Qualifications

• Active BLS
• Active ACLS
• Active NIHSS
• California RN license
• 2 years of experience
• Must be able to read and interpret EKG strips

Preferred / Helpful Experience

• Background experience with surgical patients, including CEA, fem-pop, EVARs, laparotomies, and thoracic surgeries

Unit Details

• SICU / St. John's ICU / Surgical ICU
• 10 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2
• Cerner EMR
• Charge nurse generally does not take patients, but does break relief
• Nurse aides are present as Safety Attendants (sitters)
• Vents: Yes
• Hospitalist or Intensivist in house
• IV Team: No
• RT 24/7: Yes
• Pharmacy 24/7: Yes

Schedule and Work Expectations

• Every other weekend
• Holidays rotate with core staff
• 2 of the 3 major holidays are worked
• Self-scheduling is used, but final schedules are balanced by the manager
• Block scheduling is generally not available
• Overtime and extra shifts are available
• Report is at the bedside
• Floor-specific orientation: 1 to 2 days with a preceptor

Floating

• May float to other Sacramento facilities
• Mid-shift float to another facility is rare, but can happen

Patient Population / Clinical Focus

• Post-op recoveries, primarily vascular, Fempops, VATs, thoracic, and open belly surgeries
• CRRT
• ECMO
• Line placements are common

Additional Notes

• Navy scrubs required; undershirts must be navy, white, or black
• Scrub jackets are optional and must be navy
• Candidates may not have been directly employed by any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity, within the past year
• DYS exam through UNA is required before signing the contract and must be completed within 24 to 48 hours
• Two attempts are allowed for the DYS exam
• A screenshot showing the number of attempts is required along with exam results
• If the second attempt is failed, the candidate will be made DNU for CommonSpirit AZ and Sac
• Copy of driver’s license is needed at submittal to validate legal name
• Name on Pulse must match a government-issued ID, with no middle initial or middle name
• Need 2 supervisory references from the modality submitting to; one within 12 months and one within 3 years worked
