Description
Job Opportunity: Oncology Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM
- Start Date: Approximately 3-4 weeks from compliance clearance
- Patient Ratios: 1 nurse to 3-4 patients
- Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in specialty (Oncology)
- First-time travelers: Accepted
- Weekend Requirement: Approximately 4 weekend shifts per contract (may vary)
- On-call: Not required
- Floating: Yes, within scope to meet facility needs
- Block Schedule: Not accommodated
- Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
- Pending License: Accepted
- Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: No more than 7 days RTO per 13-week contract
- Guaranteed Hours: Yes
Unit Description
- Outpatient oncology department with 8 treatment chairs operating 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM
- 7 private rooms/beds for isolation and evaluations
- Care includes chemotherapy, biotherapy, antibiotics, fluids, injections, blood transfusions, and symptom management
- Unit operates 24/7 with provider onsite at all times
- Patients may be held overnight awaiting inpatient beds
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- Chemotherapy certification (ONS/ONCC)
- Preferred: OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse)
Required Skills & Competencies
- Biotherapy: Recognize and manage side effects
- Chemotherapy: Recognize and communicate abnormal lab values
- Accessing and managing ports and central lines (including blood draws)
- Administration of coagulation factors, antifungals, antivirals, antibiotics, corticosteroids, antiemetics, Neupogen, IV push narcotics
- Blood and blood product administration
- Infusion pump management
- IV hydration and electrolyte replacement
- Starting IVs and PICC line care
- Isolation and neutropenic precautions
- Telemetry monitoring
- Patient and family education and support
- Symptom management including altered mental status, nausea/vomiting, neuropathy, edema, constipation/diarrhea, dysphagia, skin and mucous membrane alterations
Special Procedures / Unit Details
- Chemotherapy and biotherapy administration
- Blood transfusions
- Injections and IV fluids
- Electrolyte replacement
- EKGs and dysrhythmia monitoring
- Phlebotomy and blood glucose monitoring
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
- Minimum 1 year of Hematology/Oncology nursing experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Central line care and PICC line care experience
- Infusion pump management skills
- BLS and Chemotherapy certification required
- Ability to work night shifts and weekends as required
- Ability to float within scope of practice
- Must meet all background checks and compliance requirements
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Government-issued ID required
- Criminal background check within 6 months (7-year search including statewide and nationwide)
- Education verification of highest nursing degree
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- State-specific searches and registries as applicable
- Drug testing within 1 year, including multiple substances
- Physical exam within 1 year
- Fit mask testing (N95) with annual renewal
- Immunizations and titers: Tdap, TB screening, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (with boosters or declinations as applicable)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Various facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality, hand hygiene, dress code, and orientation modules
Additional Notes
- Candidates must complete unit-specific competency exams including oncology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency
- References: Two professional references required, preferably supervisors within the last year
- Skills checklist specific to oncology/outpatient infusion required within 1 year of start
- No on-call requirement, but floating within scope is expected
- No block scheduling accommodation
- Local candidates not accepted (must live 75+ miles away)
