PICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Float pool position covering various pediatric units including PICU, NICU, pediatric med-surg, pediatric PACU, pediatric ED boarders, and postpartum/mother-baby units.
  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), totaling 36 hours per week.
  • Every other weekend and every other holiday required.
  • Block scheduling cannot be accommodated or guaranteed.
  • Time off approval possible for up to 40 hours.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of PICU experience required.
  • Must have experience in both PICU and NICU. Previous NICU/PICU float pool experience is considered.
  • Comfortable working with pediatric patients across multiple units.
  • Pediatric PACU experience is highly preferred.
  • Must have experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid Virginia nursing license or ability to submit with license pending.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Dr. Brown’s Infant Driven Feeding™ certification required (can be submitted pending completion; course cost applies).

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Proof of I9 or attestation.
  • Government-issued photo ID required and must be carried during hours of service.
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, education verification, and abuse registry search if assigned to specific units.
  • Official transcript or diploma required (photocopies not accepted).
  • Education verification: BSN preferred; ASN required if BSN not held.
  • Drug screening: 10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl, within 2 months of start and updated annually.
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap (no exemptions allowed)
    • 2-step TB test or Qgold (Tspot not accepted) with chest x-ray if positive
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer; no declinations accepted for measles)
    • Hepatitis B surface antibody positive titer required (specific lab requirements apply)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or titer; declination required if titer negative)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine required annually (no exemptions or declinations accepted)
  • Physical exam within 12 months attesting ability to meet physical demands of position.
  • Completion of facility-specific forms including professional appearance guidelines, release authorization, TB screening, traveler compliance, and fit testing acknowledgment if applicable.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of recent PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) experience
  • Experience in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Additional Notes

  • Must adhere to the facility’s float pool policy.
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required.
  • Performance and internal evaluations required if previously worked with the agency over 1 year.
  • Pass/fail cardiac rhythm assessment not required for PICU/Pediatrics.

This position is ideal for experienced pediatric critical care nurses with strong PICU and NICU backgrounds who are comfortable floating across multiple pediatric specialty units during night shifts.
