Neuro Med-Surg Acute RN

Overview

• RN assignment in Neuro Med-Surg Acute
• 54-bed unit
• 12-hour nights
• 48 hours per week
• Contract length: 13 weeks
• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius

Required Qualifications

• Active IL license or confirmation that the application process has been initiated
• BLS
• NIHSS
• Level 1 trauma experience
• Previous travel experience
• Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit
• Ability to titrate drips
• Heparin gtt experience

Unit Details

• Patient ratios: days 1:4-5; nights 1:5-6
• Common patient types include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience, and some medical overflow
• Charge nurse is present 24/7 and does not take an assignment unless short-staffed and nurses would be above ratios
• House supervisor is present 24/7
• Nurse aides/patient care techs are on the unit
• High flow is used for stable COVID only, very rarely
• House-wide telemetry is used, so nurses do not need to read strips

Scheduling and Float

• Every other weekend required
• Every other holiday required
• No call or standby requirement
• Float in rotation with the rest of the staff
• When floated to the general unit floor, the traveler takes a full team
• If floated outside the general unit, the traveler only performs skills they are competent to do and is assigned with a nurse trained for that unit

Orientation

• 2 days of unit orientation, including computer training and patient care with a preceptor

Additional Notes

• Negative drug screen required
• Requested time off must be submitted
• Last four digits of SSN and middle initial are required for submission
• No scrub color requirement
• Tattoos must be covered while on duty
• No piercings besides ears
