Job Opportunity: Critical Care Float Nurse

Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Work Schedule

  • Night shifts, 3 shifts per week
  • 12-hour shifts from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM
  • Every other weekend rotation required
  • Some holiday shifts required

Unit Experience

  • Experience with multiple ICU units including:
    • Neuro ICU
    • Cardiothoracic ICU
    • Burn ICU
    • Trauma Surgery
  • Experience with Intermediate Care (IMC), Progressive Care, and General Care populations

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum of 1 year of float experience within the last year
  • Neuro ICU experience
  • Burn ICU experience
  • Intermediate Care experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)

Compliance and Background Requirements

  • Background check within 90 days prior to start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
  • Wisconsin Caregiver Background Check and BID Form required
  • Monthly monitoring through workforce monitoring systems after hire
  • Education verification as applicable
  • Drug screening required to meet standard clinical requirements
  • Physical exam recommended to meet agency standards (not facility required)

Certifications and Testing

  • Telemetry test (Adult or Pediatric as applicable) must be completed and passed before starting
  • Telemetry test retake and remediation process in place (up to 3 attempts allowed)
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Annual renewal and verification of certifications required
  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Tuberculosis (TB) testing and questionnaire, updated annually
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers required; medical or religious exemptions accepted with proper documentation
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer required; medical or religious exemptions accepted
  • Hepatitis B vaccination series or declination form required for direct patient care providers
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually during flu season (September to April)
  • Other vaccines (e.g., Meningococcal) required if working in specific departments

Additional Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Passport-style photo for badge issuance (no selfies, headwear only for religious/medical reasons)
  • Completion of communicable disease form within 90 days of start
  • Signed acknowledgment of pass/fail testing for telemetry
  • Employment application and skills checklist required annually
  • Two clinical references within the last 3 years required by agency standard

Summary

This travel contract position is ideal for experienced critical care RNs comfortable working night shifts across multiple ICU and progressive care units. Candidates must hold a valid Wisconsin or compact RN license, current BLS and ACLS certifications, and successfully complete a telemetry competency test. Compliance with extensive background checks, immunizations, and facility-specific documentation is mandatory. The contract length is approximately 13 weeks with a demanding schedule including every other weekend and some holiday shifts.
