Registered Nurse – Medical-Surgical (Contract)

Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 14 weeks (96 days ≈ 14 weeks)
Shift: Night (7:00 pm – 7:30 am), every other weekend required
Unit: Medical-Surgical, 29 beds, average census 22
Staffing Ratio: 1:6
Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to a designated group of patients on a Medicine Unit. Deliver care based on nursing theory, research, evidence-based practice, and organizational standards. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and evaluate patient care plans.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
  • Deliver nursing care integrating assessment and intervention skills.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Facilitate patient-centered care practices such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication reviews, and discharge wrap-ups.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Address patient and family concerns promptly and escalate when necessary.
  • Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening in all interactions.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Follow institutional protocols to escalate safety hazards or gaps in best practices.
  • Document nursing care accurately to support quality and performance improvement.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with nursing leadership.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
  • Ensure documentation complies with regulatory and legal standards.

  • Support a positive environment for clinical colleagues, patients, and families.
  • Advance clinical competence and nursing expertise.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethical decision-making, and effective communication.
  • Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.

Required Qualifications

  • Current New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical unit experience.
  • Prior travel experience required for travel positions (1 year travel experience). Not required for per diem roles.
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system highly preferred.

Additional Information

  • Unit census averages 22 patients.
  • Staffing ratio is 1 nurse to 6 patients.
  • Night shift with every other weekend required.
  • Contract length approximately 14 weeks.
