Registered Nurse – PCU (Acute Leukemia and Hematology)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Overview
- Unit: Acute Leukemia and Hematology
- Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Schedule: Rotating 12-hour shifts (days/nights) or nights only; shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to staffing needs
- Patient Population: Adults and Geriatrics
- Patient Diagnoses: Primarily newly diagnosed acute leukemia patients
- Staffing Ratios: Goal 1:4, can be up to 1:5
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday to Friday, dayshift
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Scheduling: No fixed schedule; self-scheduling requests accepted before finalizing
- Special Focus Areas: Infection prevention protocols, patient falls prevention
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Ohio
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience in an inpatient setting
- Hematology/Oncology experience
- Chemotherapy administration experience
- Dysrhythmia interpretation skills
- Experience using Rapid Response Teams
- Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system
Preferred Certifications
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification (check unit-specific requirements)
Required Background and Compliance Checks
- 7-year criminal background check including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and MVR if driving is required
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting with specific Ohio code (3701.881) required within 1 year of start; new fingerprinting required if break in service >90 days or results older than 1 year
- Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending
Required Health Documents
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive
- TB questionnaire in lieu of annual TB test renewal
- Adult Tdap vaccination (after age 11/12)
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, and Rubella; boosters required if low titer and no proof of vaccines
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions require documentation
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series; signed declination acceptable
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (10/1 – 3/31); decliners must wear a mask
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended
Additional Requirements
- 2 professional references required; at least one must be from a manager/director or formal leadership (charge RN acceptable as second reference)
- Employment application required including education verification
- Skills checklist required
- Unit-specific competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (EKG exam must be completed within 1 year of start and updated annually)
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgment
- License verification within 30 days of start; NURSYS verification required for RNs
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required
Notes
- Candidates must have EPIC experience for computerized charting
- Orientation includes both day and on-unit preceptor time
- Shift flexibility required due to rotating schedule and staffing needs
- Strict fingerprinting and background check protocols with specific Ohio state requirements
- No first-time travel nurses accepted for this role

Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
