Registered Nurse (RN) - Telemetry

Location: Asheville, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Information

  • Unit: General Surgery (K8)
  • Beds: 44
  • Staff per shift:
    • Day: 1 charge nurse, 11 RNs, 4 CNAs, 1 unit secretary
    • Night: 1 charge nurse, 10 RNs, 4 CNAs, 1 unit secretary
  • Patient Ratios:
    • Day shift: 1:6
    • Night shift: 1:7
  • Equipment used: Telemetry, PCA pumps, wound vacs, Baxter IV pumps, TPN, tube feeds, urinary catheters
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner

Job Description

  • Provide nursing care on a fast-paced general surgery unit with a focus on telemetry patients.
  • Manage 6-7 patients depending on the shift.
  • Patient populations primarily include urology and bowel cases.
  • Typical procedures and care include:
    • TPN administration
    • PCA management
    • Wound vacs
    • Tube feeds, PEG tubes, dobhoff and NG tubes
    • Care for colostomies, urostomies, biliary drains, JP drains, nephrostomy tubes, urinary catheters, and continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
    • Administration of heparin drips and IV antibiotics
    • Post-operative care for cholecystectomies, appendectomies, podiatry, bowel resections, plastics, urology surgeries, nephrectomies, hysterectomies, mastectomies, oral/maxillary, thyroidectomies, and hernia repairs

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification

Work Schedule & Environment

  • Hours per week: 36
  • Weekend shifts: Approximately 6 weekend shifts every 6 weeks
  • Dress code: Navy blue pants, navy blue or white scrub top and jacket (if needed), white undershirt (if needed). No sweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies, coats, or jackets allowed.
