Every other weekend or every third weekend

Unit Overview

Pediatric unit with 7 beds
Typical patient ages: 0–18 years
May float to NICU and newborn nursery
May also be used for 1:1 sitting when needed

Required Qualifications

2 years of pediatric/medical-surgical nursing experience
Ability to titrate drips
BLS certification
PALS certification

Preferred Qualifications

PICU experience
NICU experience

Clinical Details

Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2–3
Common patient types include stable pediatric med-surg, intermediate pediatrics, ICU feeder/grower overflow, respiratory, diabetes, seizures, failure to thrive, and jaundice cases
RN is expected to titrate drips
Common drips include Tylenol, Keppra, and insulin
Remote telemetry monitoring is used, and RNs do not need to read or interpret strips
Respiratory support includes CPAP, high-flow, and nasal cannula
Pediatrician is in-house during the day and on call at night
RT is in-house 24/7

Schedule Notes

Self-scheduling based on seniority
Manager may consider block scheduling if it meets unit needs
Holiday requirement: 2 per year
Orientation: 2 unit-specific 12-hour shifts

Additional Notes

Locked, close-knit pediatric unit
Strong communication and independence are important for success
RTO must be provided upfront; additional RTO will not be approved
