Registered Nurse - MedSurg Telemetry

Location: Chesapeake, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (with possible extension)


Job Details

  • Shift: Days, weekdays, every other weekend (EOW), float, holidays within contract
  • Schedule Options: 3x12 or 4x12 hour shifts (overtime after 48 hours) — indicate preference
  • Patient Ratio: 1:7
  • Unit: Medical-Surgical Telemetry (MS/Tele)
  • Must be proficient in EPIC electronic health record system (no exceptions)
  • Required skills: IV start, telemetry interpretation, experience with neurology/stroke patients

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification (must be current)

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of telemetry experience, with telemetry experience within the last year
  • Experience with neurology and stroke patients
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system

Background & Compliance

  • Zero tolerance for any license or background issues
  • 7-year criminal background check required within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Must provide current NURSYS report and Qualivis cover sheet including Return to Office (RTO) documentation
  • Fingerprinting required (Virginia VSP National Criminal Background Check) effective 1/1/2026
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Physical exam within 12 months, updated annually
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year (PAPR not allowed)
  • Required immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (titers within 10 years)
    • Hepatitis B (titer or declination)
    • Varicella (titer or declination)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (or approved exemption with mask requirement)
  • COVID vaccine preferred but not required

Additional Requirements

  • Pass/fail testing on EKG/medication competency (must score 80% or higher)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Color blindness testing (100% passing score required)
  • Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually
  • Passport-style photo for badge prior to start
  • Proof of 2 professional references
  • Completed employment application/resume
  • Job description acknowledgment and safety manual acknowledgment required

Notes

  • Dayshift with a mix of weekdays, weekends, holidays, and float assignments
  • Must be comfortable with neurology/stroke patient care and telemetry monitoring
  • Strict compliance with all credentialing, background, and health requirements is mandatory for contract continuation
