Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit (Travel/Contract)

Location: Bridgeport, Connecticut
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Work in a short-term acute care hospital, Level II Trauma Center
  • Night shift with every other weekend and float as needed within the department
  • Charting system: EPIC

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 2 years of Stepdown nursing experience, with Stepdown experience within the last year
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit Mask Test within 12 months of start, updated annually (3M N95 preferred; clean shaven required)
  • Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray documentation (T-Spot or QGold within 6 months, or 2 PPDs within 12 months)
  • TB Questionnaire updated annually
  • Immunizations:
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 MMR vaccines; boosters required if low titer
    • Hepatitis B: Positive titer, proof of 3-dose series, or declination within 1 year
    • Varicella: Positive titer, 2 vaccines, or physician-documented history; boosters if low/equivocal titer
    • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for Pediatric specialties, Labor and Delivery, Postpartum (declination accepted)
  • 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months of start (rapid accepted)
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 – 3/31); declinations not allowed
  • COVID vaccination series preferred

Background and Employment History

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Education verification required; foreign equivalency evaluation required for internationally educated candidates
  • Employment application with 7-year work history, no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
  • References per standard protocol

Additional Information

  • Candidate must have valid photo ID matching legal name on first day
  • EPIC testing is highly encouraged prior to orientation for those with EPIC experience; onsite EPIC training provided if testing not completed or failed
  • Various attestations and training modules must be reviewed and signed, often via electronic signature
  • Floating within department and working every other weekend required
