Registered Nurse (ICU) - Travel Assignment

Location: Alexandria, Louisiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Hours per Week: 36


Unit Overview

  • Medical ICU with 26 beds
  • Patient ratio: 2:1
  • Staffing includes RNs and unit secretary/COVID runner; total care provided by RNs
  • Equipment used: ventilators, Alaris IV pumps, balloon pumps, ventriculostomy drains, glucometers
  • Documentation system: Meditech with Evidence Based Clinical Documentation (EBCD)
  • Scheduling: 12-hour shifts (7 AM to 7 PM), every other weekend, holiday shifts required
  • Floating: Nurses may float to other Medical-Surgical units, prioritizing ICU coverage
  • Patient experience focus: hourly rounding, bedside hand-off reporting, “My Care Board” completion, use of AIDET for compassionate care
  • PPE includes masks, face shields, goggles, PAPRs, and hoods for COVID-19 patients
  • Unit recognized as HCA Unit of Distinction (top 10% and 5%), ranked #2 ICU in HCA in 2019
  • Many staff nationally certified; several highly tenured nurses
  • Self-scheduling available within guidelines
  • Use of iMobile technology by staff

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Louisiana
  • Minimum 1 year of Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Proficient in ventilator management and critical care drip knowledge

Skills & Competencies

  • Advanced skills: ventilator management, critical care drip knowledge
  • Proficient assessment skills with cardiac, neurological, and respiratory systems
  • Ability to don and doff PPE correctly
  • Positive attitude, flexibility, teamwork, self-motivation, strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse environment

Procedures Performed on Unit

  • Intubations
  • Cardioversions
  • Ventriculostomy drain placement and management
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) management
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
  • Proning of patients

Dress Code

  • Ceil blue scrubs required
  • White or ceil blue scrub jacket optional
  • Green surgery scrubs provided when working with COVID-19 patients

Staff nurses very friendly and lots of team work. Very high acuity patients provides good experience.

Cons

HCA facility, lots of ED holds, ICU holds in the department. Facility accepts lots of transfers. Patients in hallway beds due to high volume.
