Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit

Location: Henderson, Kentucky
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour Days (6:30 AM - 7:00 PM)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours/week (48 hours upon request)

Job Description

• Work primarily on Step Down/Telemetry Unit caring for patients with conditions such as sepsis, CHF, COPD, DKA, cirrhosis, dementia, and post-surgical cases (urology, abdominal, ortho).
• Manage drips including insulin, heparin, cardiac drips.
• Float within skillset to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice; mid-shift float within the same campus possible.
• Weekend requirement: every third weekend; holiday requirement: every other holiday.
• May be required to precept students and new hires.
• Smaller unit with strong teamwork and experienced nursing staff.
• Scrub color: Navy blue; no competing health system or agency logos allowed.
• Teaching hospital environment.
• COVID-19 vaccine not currently required (subject to change).

Required Qualifications

• Active, current compact RN license.
• Certifications: AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
• Minimum 2 years RN experience, including at least 1 year in Step Down/Progressive Care Unit.
• At least 1 prior travel assignment required.
• Recent EPIC charting experience (checkoff class required).
• Must pass Telemetry interpretation tests.
• Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to initiate and titrate insulin, heparin, and cardiac drips.

Preferred Skills

• PIV insertion.
• Management of stable home ventilators.
• Chest tube and indwelling drain care.
• Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI).
• Administration of stable drips (lasix, protonix).
• Blood product administration.
• Continuous BiPAP management.
• Neutropenic precautions.
• Resilient, adaptable, and strong team player.

Unit Information

• Step Down Unit: 10 beds; Day shift nurse-to-patient ratio 1:4-5; Night shift 1:5-6.
• Telemetry Unit: 15 beds; Day shift ratio 1:5-6; Night shift 1:6.
• Charge nurse rarely takes patients on day shift; takes assignment on night shift.

Additional Notes

• Orientation occurs bi-weekly.
• Overtime applies after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts.
• No local candidates within 40-mile radius accepted.
• Three call-ins may result in termination.
• GSA hours not guaranteed during orientation week; guaranteed set hours otherwise except during unit closures on holidays.
