Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/IMC Float Pool
Location: Centennial, Colorado (Zone 1 – 60 mile radius around Colorado Springs)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Job Overview
- Float nursing role covering multiple PCU/IMC units within a 60-mile radius zone around Colorado Springs, including several hospitals.
- Units include various specialties: General, Cardiac, Neuro, Oncology, Rehab, Renal, Bariatrics, Ortho, Trauma, ED Observation, and more.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:3-4 depending on patient acuity.
- Schedules released 4–6 weeks in advance with two formats:
- Assigned to a single facility for the week with possible floating within that facility.
- Just-In-Time (JIT) assignments where facility is assigned 1–2 hours before shift start.
- Must be flexible to fill gaps in permanent scheduling.
- Weekend requirement: 6-9 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule.
- May be asked to participate in holiday rotation.
- Call or standby is rare and only for low census situations.
- No designated home base facility; must float throughout the entire zone.
- Orientation: 1-2 days with a preceptor.
- Dress code: Any scrub color allowed.
Patient Population & Clinical Focus
- Adult to geriatric patients.
- Common diagnoses include cardiac, neurological, orthopedic, oncology, renal, urology post-surgical, general surgery post-appendectomy, gynecology, psychiatric/detox, ENT, general medicine, and stable long-term placement patients.
- May be asked to float to ICU (low acuity holds), PCU/Stepdown, and Medical-Surgical Telemetry units.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Colorado
- PCU - Progressive Care Unit (2 years of experience)
- PCU - Progressive Care Unit experience within the last year
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- ACLS issued by American Heart Association
- NIHSS
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Driver's License
- Experience with cardiac drips, insulin, and ativan
- Ability to titrate and manage cardiac drips, insulin, ativan, and heparin
Additional Information
- Floating is mandatory within the zone; housing must accommodate travel within the 60-mile radius.
- Charge nurse is designated on each unit and typically does not take patient assignments unless necessary.
- Nurse aides are available on the units.
- Respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, and BiPAP are present on units.
- Time off requests must be submitted prior to starting the assignment.
This position is ideal for experienced PCU/IMC RNs who are flexible, enjoy varied clinical experiences, and are comfortable working across multiple specialties and facilities within a defined geographic zone.
