Required Qualifications

  • Active RN license
  • 2 years of ED experience
  • ACLS
  • BLS
  • PALS
  • NIHSS
  • TNCC

Schedule and Assignment Details

  • 12-hour shifts
  • Every other weekend
  • Every other holiday
  • Travelers must be flexible to help fill gaps in permanent scheduling
  • Schedules are released 4–6 weeks in advance
  • Assignment may be scheduled at a single facility for the week or assigned just-in-time 1–2 hours before shift start
  • Travelers are expected to float throughout Zone 3, which covers a 60-mile radius from the zone’s city center
  • No home base facility
  • Must be in state for the week of orientation
  • Unit orientation is 2–3 days

Unit Environment

  • ER/ED float role
  • Patient ratios: 1:4–5 based on acuity
  • Charge nurse takes an assignment
  • No monitor techs; nurse must be able to read and interpret telemetry
  • RT is available 24/7
  • Techs support unit secretary work, assist nurses on the floor, and assist in triage
  • ER holds are intermixed with the ER
  • Separate psych/seclusion rooms are not available
  • Average daily volume varies by location: 40–168 patients per day
