Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Neuro)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: 23-bed inpatient General Neurology/Medical Stroke/Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
  • Patient Population: Adult and geriatric patients with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, seizures, and medically managed strokes
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: 4-5 weekend shifts per 4-week period plus holiday rotation
  • Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 5 patients
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to like units or sister facilities as needed
  • Special Notes:
    • Unit supports Comprehensive Spine and Epilepsy Center programs
    • May care for overflow neurosurgical and spine surgery patients
    • During hurricane season (June–November), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
  • Neurology experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Copy of Driver’s License and Social Security Card
  • Completed and accurate I-9 form with work eligibility attestation
  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years, including:
    • SSN Trace
    • Statewide and national criminal checks
    • Sex offender registry
    • FACIS 3 and international searches if applicable
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education verification (diploma or transcripts as placeholder if needed)
  • South Carolina Medicaid Excluded Providers search (for sub vendors)
  • NURSYS verification for RN licensure
  • Proof of 2 clinical references (hospital evaluations accepted)
  • Employment application/resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Verification of last 3 clinical employers (or all if fewer than 3)

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Initial physical exam, updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or appropriate follow-up for positive tests
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: titer, vaccine series, or declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form
  • Annual TB questionnaire completion

Competency & Training

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start
  • Competency exam required
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules (approx. 2 hours) before starting orientation
  • Upload clear, passport-style badge photo (frontal view, shoulders up, business casual attire) by Wednesday before start

Additional Notes

  • IV Therapy certification not required for RN but may be required for select LPNs
  • Radiation badge required only for specific roles (not applicable for this RN position)
  • Travelers must upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into the facility’s system
  • During hurricane season, be prepared for possible emergency response assignments
  • Floating between units is expected to meet facility needs

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neuro-medical surgical unit with a supportive team and a focus on complex neurological patient care. Night shift and weekend availability are essential.
