Registered Nurse (MS/Tele) - Travel/Contract

Location: Rochester, New York
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 36

Job Description

• Provide care on Medical-Surgical/Telemetry unit with mandatory competency in phlebotomy and IV placement.
• Manage cardiac monitoring and emergency response, including interpretation and management of dysrhythmias and use of Rapid Response Teams.
• Perform peripheral IV therapy and phlebotomy.
• Provide respiratory care including nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks, and non-invasive airway management.
• Follow isolation precautions.
• Patient diagnoses primarily include cardiovascular conditions and wound care.
• Use special equipment such as Hoyer lifts and wound vacs.
• Typical nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Day/Evening: 5:1 (stretch 6-7)
  • Night: 6-7:1 (stretch 8-10 if staff calls in)
• Float to Med/Surg, ICU, and ED units as needed, but only to care for Med/Surg level patients or assist within scope.
• Every other weekend required.
• Block scheduling may be accommodated but is not guaranteed.
• Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) assist with vital signs, blood glucose checks, EKGs, and activities of daily living.
• EPIC electronic health record system preferred.
• Orientation includes 4 hours of modules, 4 hours classroom with educator, and remainder of first 12-hour shift spent orienting on unit.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
• Minimum 1 year of recent experience in Medical-Surgical/Telemetry nursing within the last year.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
• National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
• Experience in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing.
• Experience in Emergency Department (ED) nursing.

Health and Compliance Requirements

• Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually.
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year; TB questionnaire accepted in lieu of annual renewal.
• Required immunizations or proof of immunity:

  • Measles (Rubeola)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Varicella
  • Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive titer, completed series, or declination)
• Drug screening within 30 days of start.
• Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) within 1 year, updated annually.
• Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination required during flu season.
• Snellen eye exam within 1 year.
• COVID vaccination preferred but not required.

Background and Documentation

• Government-issued photo ID required.
• 7-year criminal background check including felony, SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, and education verification from primary source.
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 3 months of start and updated monthly.
• Foreign education equivalency evaluation required if applicable.
• Employment application and work history verification required.
• References required for direct hire candidates (2 references within 3 years).
• Facility-specific documents including photo for badge and pre-employment compliance attestations must be completed.

• No local candidates accepted within 75 miles radius.
• Rapid turnaround time (RTO) expected to be close to 1 week.
• Scrubs color: Navy blue or white.
• Float assignments limited to scope of practice.
• Nurse-to-patient ratios may stretch during staff shortages.
