Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Hours per Week: 36 hours

Required Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum Specialty Experience: 1.5 years in Labor and Delivery nursing
- Prior Travel Experience: Not accepted for first-time travelers (must have prior travel experience)
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA or RQI accepted
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – AHA only
- AWHONN Intermediate Course
- License: Valid Registered Nurse license for Indiana (online primary source verification required within 30 days before start)
- References: Minimum of 2 references from recent employment, verified within 2 years, from charge nurses, managers, supervisors, or above
Clinical and Technical Skills Required
- Experience with high-risk OB conditions and procedures including:
- NST (Non-Stress Tests), Reflex checks, Edema assessment, Clonus
- Use of External and Internal Fetal Monitoring (EFM, IUPC)
- Management of diabetes mellitus, malpresentations (breech, face, brow), multiple gestation, placenta previa/abruptio
- Pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, RH incompatibilities, uterine rupture
- VBAC management and trial of labor
- Proficient in administration and monitoring of:
- Blood and blood products, antihypertensives, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate therapy, Pitocin, prostaglandins, terbutaline, amnioinfusion
- Skilled in assisting with:
- High-risk deliveries, vaginal deliveries, forceps/vacuum extraction, hemorrhage/shock management, C-section recovery
- Newborn care including:
- APGAR scoring, neonatal resuscitation, radiant warmers, infant identification, newborn assessment, hypoglycemia management, thermoregulation
- Additional competencies:
- Foley catheter insertion, fundus/lochia/perineum care, wound assessment and care, vaccine administration
- Experience with Cerner electronic health record system
Floating and Work Requirements
- May float to Emergency Department at a nearby hospital to provide OB-specific care alongside a primary RN (no primary assignment in ED)
- On first float shift, must arrive 30 minutes early for orientation
- Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays during the contract
- Guaranteed hours vary by shift pattern:
- 3x12 hr shifts = 36 hours/week
Health and Compliance Requirements
- Background Checks:
- Must include 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, county/state/national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS Level III
- Education verification and transcript/diploma required
- Health Documents:
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Immunizations or positive titers required for: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap strongly recommended
- Fit Mask (Respirator) Test: Must be completed within 12 months prior to start with approved respirators (N95 or equivalent)
- Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology test and unit competency exam required
- Orientation and Facility-Specific Documents: Must complete all required facility forms and orientation packets prior to start
Additional Notes
- Locals are not accepted for this position
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RN license holders to work at their facilities after 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR and Allied/Ambulatory RN travelers (this position is not exempt)
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport required (clear copy)
- Parking is free at the facility
