Unit Information

  • Unit: K8 General Surgery
  • Beds: 44
  • Staffing:
    • Day Shift: 1 charge nurse, 11 RNs, 4 CNAs, 1 unit secretary
    • Night Shift: 1 charge nurse, 10 RNs, 4 CNAs, 1 unit secretary
  • Patient Ratios:
    • Day Shift: 1:6
    • Night Shift: 1:7
  • Equipment Used: Telemetry, PCA pumps, wound vacs, Baxter IV pumps, TPN, tube feeds, urinary catheters
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner

Required Skills and Experience

  • Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty (RN)
  • Required Competencies:
    • Telemetry competency
    • Ability to manage 6-7 patients depending on shift
    • Experience with urology and bowel patient populations preferred
  • Typical Procedures:
    • TPN administration
    • PCA management
    • Wound vacs
    • Tube feeds, PEG tubes, dobhoff tubes
    • NG tubes
    • Colostomies and urostomies care
    • Management of drains (biliary, JP, nephrostomy, urinary catheters, CBI)
    • Heparin drips, IV antibiotics
    • Post-operative care for cholecystectomies, appendectomies, podiatry, bowel resections, plastics, urology surgeries, nephrectomies, hysterectomies, mastectomies, oral/maxillary, thyroidectomies, hernia repairs

Certifications and Licenses

  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • NIH Stroke Certification
    • Telemetry certification
  • Licenses:
    • Valid Registered Nurse License

Work Environment and Culture

  • Personality Fit:
    • Positive, smiling, and engaging demeanor
    • Fast-paced and energetic
    • Strong communication skills with charge nurse, unit secretary, providers, and CNA team
  • Dress Code: Navy blue pants, navy blue or white scrub top and jacket (if needed), white undershirt (if needed). No sweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies, coats, or jackets.
  • Floating Areas: Other med-surg units as needed
  • Schedule: 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule

  • This unit is part of a Level II trauma center with comprehensive stroke and neonatal intensive care services.
  • The hospital has received multiple recognitions for clinical quality and nursing excellence.
