Job Opportunity: Critical Care Float Nurse
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Work Schedule
- Night shifts, 3 shifts per week
- 12-hour shifts (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM)
- Every other weekend and some holidays required
Unit Experience
- Experience with multiple ICU units including:
- Neuro ICU
- Cardiothoracic ICU
- Burn ICU
- Trauma Surgery ICU
- Experience with IMC/Progressive and General Care populations
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
- Minimum of 1 year of Critical Care Float experience within the last year
- Float experience in critical care settings
- Experience in Neuro ICU, Burn ICU, Intermediate Care, and Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
Required Testing and Certifications
- Telemetry Pass/Fail Testing (Adult and Pediatric as applicable) with strict passing criteria:
- 80% overall score
- 100% in lethal rhythms subcategory
- 100% on 3rd degree heart block questions
- Remediation and retesting allowed up to 3 attempts with required remediation course after 2nd failure
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications must be current and issued by AHA
- Other certifications as applicable by profession and unit
Background and Compliance Requirements
- Background check within 90 days prior to start, including:
- Social Security Number trace
- County and nationwide criminal checks
- Sex offender registry check
- Background review required for any pending or convicted criminal charges (excluding traffic violations)
- Wisconsin BID Form and Caregiver Screening required within 90 days of start
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required upon hire and monitored monthly
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
- Annual TB Questionnaire
- Proof of immunizations or positive titers for:
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
- Varicella (chickenpox)
- Hepatitis B vaccination series or declination form if declining
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually during flu season (September 22 – April 13)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination proof (if applicable)
- Drug screening required per agency standards
Documentation and Other Requirements
- Photo for badge (passport-style, no selfies or headwear except religious/medical)
- Signed acknowledgment of Orientation Safety Manual and Pass/Fail Telemetry Testing
- Employment application and skills checklist (annual)
- Two clinical references within the last 3 years (agency standard)
Additional Notes
- Physical exam not required by facility but must be collected to meet agency standards
- Fit mask testing completed onsite; no copy required by agency
- Facility-specific forms for communicable diseases, vaccine exemptions, and declinations may be required
- Study guides provided for Telemetry exams (review only)
This position is ideal for experienced critical care nurses comfortable with multiple ICU settings and night shift work, who hold the necessary Wisconsin RN licensure and certifications, and are prepared to complete required testing and compliance documentation.
