Registered Nurse (Med/Surg)

Location: Urbana, Illinois
Employment Type: Clinical Nursing
Shift: Night
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide professional nursing care to a group of patients during assigned shifts on a medical-surgical unit. Responsibilities include patient assessment, care planning, implementation of nursing interventions, medication administration, and ensuring patient safety. Collaborate effectively with the healthcare team to promote quality patient care and a positive work environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform initial patient assessments and develop individualized care plans based on patient and family needs.
  • Implement and modify nursing care plans through continuous evaluation.
  • Administer medications following the "5 Rights": right patient, medication, route, dose, and time.
  • Delegate tasks to healthcare team members and validate completion.
  • Document nursing care accurately and timely, meeting unit standards.
  • Maintain patient safety by adhering to fall precautions, pressure ulcer prevention, isolation protocols, and ambulation safety.
  • Respond promptly to patient call lights and requests.
  • Use critical thinking and nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in patient condition.
  • Facilitate efficient admission, discharge, and testing processes for patients.
  • Communicate effectively within the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care.
  • Promote a positive and healing environment on the unit.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois.
  • Minimum of 3 years of medical-surgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.

Additional Information

  • Work schedule consists of three 12-hour night shifts per week.
  • Emphasis on patient safety, documentation, critical thinking, time management, delegation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
