Registered Nurse (ER) - West Virginia

Location

• City: New Martinsville, West Virginia

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Unit Details

• Emergency Room with 12 beds (2 trauma bays)
• No fast track; triage occurs in patient rooms
• 1 designated psych/seclusion room; all rooms are multi-purpose and can be converted
• No on-site security; staff calls 911 if needed
• Average patient volume: ~20 patients per day
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 1:6 depending on staffing and acuity
• Team-based environment with 2 RNs per shift
• ED Physicians present: 1 per shift
• No charge nurse on weekends; charge nurse available Monday-Friday

Shift & Scheduling

• 12-hour shifts: 7 AM–7 PM or 7 PM–7 AM
• Possible varied shifts including 6:45 AM–7:15 PM, 8:45 AM–9:15 PM, 10:45 AM–11:15 PM, or 6:45 PM–7:15 AM
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend (EOW) with full shift nights and split shift days
• Holiday requirement: every other holiday (EOH)
• No self-scheduling; supervisor collaborates on schedule to meet unit needs
• No floating outside the ER
• No call or standby requirement

Required Certifications

• BLS (AHA)
• ACLS (AHA)
• PALS (AHA)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Experience

• Prefer more than 1 year of ER nursing experience

Clinical Skills & Responsibilities

• Must be able to perform arterial blood gases (ABGs)
• ER nurses draw their own labs
• RNs read cardiac strips; no monitor techs on unit
• Respiratory therapy coverage limited; RNs may bag patients until RT arrives
• TeleStroke program participation

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Mix of geriatric and pediatric patients
• Common conditions: pneumonia, congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Orientation & Training

• One day of unit-specific orientation with a preceptor

Additional Notes

• Portable chest radiology available; main radiology department located adjacent to ER
• Dress code: currently any color or prints allowed
