Job Details
- Specialty: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)
- Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights
- Shift Length: 12 hours
- Hours per Week: 36
- Trauma Level: Level II
- ER Beds/Trauma Bays: 21 (including fast track)
- Typical Patient Volume: 50-60 patients per day
- Patient Acuity: Mostly ESI Level 3, some Level 4, rarely Level 1
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:3-4 based on acuity; may be 1:5 if boarding patients are grouped
- Common Patient Types: Pediatrics to geriatrics, trauma cases, stroke, STEMI, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, CAH transfers
- Physician Coverage: 24/7 MD coverage (no mid-level providers); 1 MD overnight, 3 MDs during busiest times
- Support Staff: 1-2 ED techs per shift (EKGs, vitals, patient care), respiratory therapists available as needed (not 24/7 in ER), no dedicated Telemetry techs (RNs interpret cardiac strips)
- Orientation: 1-2 shifts of unit-specific orientation in the ER
- Scheduling: Manager schedules shifts; varied start times (7a-7p, 9a-9p, 11a-11p, 2p-2a, 7p-7a)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Floating: Rare, only as needed to assist or based on census
- Dress Code: Any color scrubs allowed
Clinical Environment & Equipment
- Fast Track: Vertical flow area with chairs; stable patients may be sent back to waiting room with MD orders; travelers often utilized here
- Triage: Separate triage area; core staff usually perform triage, travelers may take triage competencies if experienced
- Holding Area: ER RN manages boarding patients; stable patients go to vertical flow, unstable remain near nurses’ station
- Psych Room: 1 psych/seclusion room with camera monitoring
- Security: In-house 24/7, located within ER
- Common Drips: Vasopressors, heparin, antiarrhythmics; critical care drips for ICU holds require 1:1 nursing
- Respiratory Equipment: RT handles vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow; RNs troubleshoot as needed
- Imaging: X-Ray and CT adjacent to ER; stable patients transported by CT tech, unstable patients accompanied by RN
- Lab Draws: RNs draw labs from IV starts; phlebotomy available as resource
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC required
- Experience: Prefer previous travel experience but open to first-time travelers
- License: Must hold a valid RN license appropriate for North Dakota
Additional Information
- Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any related healthcare system facilities
- Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
