DIRECT HIRE
LABOR & DELIVERY REGISTERED NURSE (L&D RN)
Schedule: Three 12-Hour Shifts per Week | Alternating Weekends & Holidays
Shift: Evenings | 12-Hour Shifts
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 5 years of Labor & Delivery experience required.
- Minimum 1 year of acute care nursing experience, not including orientation, required.
- BSN or MSN required.
- Knowledge of current nursing, medical, and healthcare trends and practices in patient care.
- Strong patient assessment skills.
- Sound problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to adapt and perform effectively in a high-stress, fast-paced environment with multiple interruptions.
- Ability to recognize and respond to emergency sounds and signals.
- Ability to operate computers, medical equipment, and other devices as required.
- Ability to maintain concentration on fine details and complete tasks for extended periods despite interruptions.
- Ability to understand and apply multiple related concepts while managing multiple tasks throughout the day.
License & Certification
- Registered Nurse (RN) License – New York State Board of Nursing required.
- BLS – Basic Life Support, American Heart Association required.
- ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support, American Heart Association required according to applicable new-hire timeframe.
- NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation Program, American Heart Association required for all RNs working in Labor & Delivery, Mother-Baby, and NICU. Newly hired L&D, Mother-Baby, and NICU nurses must obtain NRP within 180 days.
- PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support, American Heart Association required within applicable new-hire timeframe for designated pediatric, emergency, PACU, urgent care, and ambulatory surgery areas.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Role Overview
The Registered Nurse provides direct patient care and collaborates with patients, families/significant others, physicians, peers, and members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. The RN assesses patient needs, develops and implements individualized care plans, and evaluates medical and nursing interventions in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, standards, and nursing philosophy. The position demonstrates leadership, professional accountability, and commitment to ongoing growth.
Responsibilities
- Provide safe, respectful, and patient-centered care that promotes mutual respect, shared decision-making, informed consent, patient autonomy, and dignity.
- Provide respectful birthing care to Labor & Delivery patients.
- Utilize the nursing process to address age-specific patient needs, including:
- Biophysical care.
- Psychosocial needs.
- Patient/family education.
- Safety and environmental needs.
- Discharge planning.
- Assess patients and establish appropriate priorities for care.
- Recognize and appropriately address patient care and unit-based issues.
- Administer blood and blood products according to hospital policy.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Integrate patient rights and nursing ethics into daily practice.
- Adhere to infection control standards to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections.
- Follow Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
- Delegate activities to ancillary staff in accordance with the State Nurse Practice Act.
- Practice in accordance with the ANA Code of Nursing Ethics and Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice.
- Support and promote the WPH Professional Nursing Practice Model.
- Support and advance the Magnet model.
- Participate in Performance Improvement initiatives.
- Utilize appropriate cost-containment practices.
- Assume Charge Nurse responsibilities as assigned.
- Support the management of NICU infants requiring inter-facility transport, as applicable.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- L&D RNs provide comprehensive and respectful birthing care.
- NICU responsibilities may include management of infants requiring inter-facility transport.
Patient Population
- Labor & Delivery patients.
- Mothers and newborns in the Mother-Baby setting.
- Neonatal patients in the NICU, including infants requiring inter-facility transport.
Schedule
