Urology nurses, also called urologic nurses, are registered nurses who specialize in diagnosing, treating, and educating patients with urologic health issues or diseases. Their focus includes the urinary tract and kidneys in male and female patients and male reproductive organs. Urology nurses may care for patients dealing with urinary tract and bladder infections, kidney and bladder stones, certain cancers, prostatitis, incontinence, and aspects of male and female infertility. They may deal with everything from routine to extremely complex cases involving a range of conditions and diseases, making each day different and potentially challenging.

Urology nurses work in various healthcare settings and treat patients of all ages. They’re trained to provide checkups and allowed to treat certain common conditions that affect the urologic system without consulting with a doctor first. Education is one of a urology nurse’s most important job duties because they are the patients’ first resource for information on managing and treating their conditions. Some common tasks a urology nurse may perform include:

Urology nurses may work in inpatient or outpatient settings. They frequently work in hospitals, urology clinics, outpatient centers, fertility clinics, and private doctors' offices. However, they may find employment anywhere patients receive short-term or long-term care for urological issues. Urology nurses who choose a urologic sub-specialty work with specific patient populations. For example, urologic nurses who specialize in pediatric urology may work at children’s hospitals, pediatric clinics, and pediatrician offices.

Good urology nurses possess significant knowledge of the male and female urinary tract and reproductive systems. They also understand the pathophysiology associated with urologic diseases, infections, and injuries, and are skilled at providing all the common urological treatments. Successful urology nurses are sensitive to patients’ embarrassment over talking about their symptoms and are skilled at making them feel comfortable by discussing distressing topics in discreet and mature ways. They’re highly observant with excellent active listening skills, which allow them to deduce patients’ problems from vague descriptions. Other desirable traits in good urology nurses include above-average organizational, critical thinking, and verbal and written communication skills.

Individuals interested in pursuing a career as a travel urology nurse must first become a registered nurse. At a minimum, this requires an Associate Degree in Nursing but a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is often preferred. Graduates of accredited nursing programs must then pass the NCLEX-RN exam and fulfill all state licensing requirements to become a registered nurse.

Urology nurses may hold Basic Life Support (BLS) or Certified Urologic Registered Nurse (CURN), among others.

Some healthcare employers may prefer urology nurse job candidates with Certified Urologic Registered Nurse (CURN), and some may even require specific professional certifications.
