What is a Pediatric ED Nurse?
Pediatric emergency department nurses are registered nurses who specialize in providing immediate care to younger patients, from neonates to adolescents. They assess children’s conditions or injuries upon arrival and provide medical care throughout their ED stay. Pediatric ED nursing jobs are some of the most challenging, most rewarding nursing positions, and some of the highest paying. Pediatric ED nurses are valued for their quick thinking and ability to work under pressure, and they’re always in high demand.
What does a Pediatric Emergency Department nurse do?
From high fevers and airway emergencies, to major trauma, pediatric ED nurses are well-trained to quickly assess and handle multifaceted injuries and acute or chronic illnesses of children of all ages. They provide medical care to these patients throughout their stay in the emergency department and discharge them once they’re stabilized. They also educate patients’ parents or guardians on continued care and provide detailed instructions on necessary medications, including dosages, side effects, and symptoms that require a return visit to the hospital. Common tasks include:
Performing triage to quickly assess the seriousness of a patient’s condition
Prioritizing treatment based on assessments
Conducting physical examinations
Monitoring patient progress and consulting with supervising physicians
Performing IV insertions, assisting with intubations, and other vital medical procedures
Entering orders for and reporting results of diagnostic tests and images
Preparing patients for diagnostic testing or surgery
Providing life support for babies, children, and adolescents
Administering medications to minimize pain or facilitate treatment
Recording vitals and updating patient records
Easing mental and emotional trauma of patients and their families
Where do Pediatric ED nurses work?
Pediatric emergency department nurses primarily work in the EDs of major hospitals under the pediatrics unit, providing care to younger patients who require immediate attention. However, pediatric emergency nurses also may be employed by urgent care centers. They also may be part of air medical or medical flight teams when they have young patients with serious and urgent medical needs that require transfer to a higher level of care.
What skills make a good Pediatric ED nurse?
Good pediatric ED nurses have the age-specific knowledge and skills to perform emergency evaluations and provide treatment for children of all ages, including neonates, infants, toddlers, young children, preteens, and adolescents. They’re calm, quick thinking, and act swiftly to combat life-threatening situations caused by traumatic injuries or severe illnesses. Exceptional pediatric ED nurses have specialized knowledge in performing triage and prioritizing patients. Excellence in time management, the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, adaptability, and superior interpersonal skills are must-have attributes of successful pediatric ED nurses.
How to become a Pediatric ED Travel Nurse
The first step towards a career as a pediatric ED travel nurse is completing an associate degree in an accredited nursing program, but most employers prefer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing for this specialty. Graduates must pass the NCLEX-RN exam and complete all state licensing requirements to become a registered nurse.
Pediatric ED nursing applicants must possess Basic Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support certifications. Some hospitals also require Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification and prefer or require Neonatal Resuscitation Program and/or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course credentials. Earning the Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse credential from the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing is recommended. Most pediatric ED travel nurse positions require one to three years of experience, usually in a pediatrics ED setting.
What certifications are commonly held by Pediatric ED nurses?
Pediatric ED nurses may hold BLS - Basic Life Support, ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support, PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support, NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Program, CPEN - Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse, ENPC - Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course, ENPC-I - Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course Instructor, SANE-A - Certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Adult/Adolescent or SANE-P - Certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Pediatric among others.
