Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Location: Asheville, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Information

Unit: Cardiovascular Progressive Care (CVPC)
Patient Population:
- Cardiovascular surgery and vascular surgery patients, including open heart surgery (CABG, AVR, MVR, Bentall, TAVR, etc.)
- Thoracic lung surgery (lobectomy, thoracotomy)
- Esophagogastrectomy
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair (open and endovascular)
- Femoral-popliteal bypass
- Carotid endarterectomies
- Overflow medical cardiology patients (heart failure, DKA, chest pain, sepsis, heart block)
Number of Beds: 40 cardiac surgery stepdown beds
Staffing: Approximately 100 total staff
Typical Patient Ratios:
- RN: 1:5
- Patient Care Technicians (PCT): 1:13
Equipment: Baxter IV pumps, CADD epidural pumps, various lifts
Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner

Required Skills and Experience

Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including experience within the last year
Telemetry experience
Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification

Typical Procedures Performed

Epidural management
Chest tube management
Tube feedings
IV medication management (including cardiac drips such as phenylephrine, dobutamine, dopamine, milrinone, cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, heparin, nitroglycerin, ketamine)

Work Environment and Culture

Fast-paced, team-oriented environment
Flexibility required
No on-call responsibilities
Weekend Requirement: Minimum 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Saturday/Sunday, day or night shifts)
Holiday work flexibility required

Required Certifications and Licenses

Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in North Carolina
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
BLS (Basic Life Support)
NIH Stroke Certification

Additional Information

Floating assignments may include other stepdown units or medical-surgical units with similar patient ratios, and ER inpatient holding areas
Dress code: Scrubs in all navy, white tops with navy bottoms, or all white

This position is ideal for RNs with strong cardiovascular progressive care experience seeking a travel contract in a high-acuity, specialized cardiac surgery stepdown unit.
