    Description

    Registered Nurse (ER) - Travel Contract

    Location: Bakersfield, California
    Contract Length: 13 weeks


    Job Summary

    Seeking an experienced ER nurse for a travel assignment in a busy hospital emergency department. The role involves caring for both adult and pediatric patients, with approximately 325 patient visits per day across adult and pediatric ERs. The nurse will be required to float to the Pediatric ER as needed.


    Required Qualifications

    • Valid RN license in California
    • Minimum 3 years of Emergency Department (ED) experience, including experience within the last year
    • One completed travel assignment
    • Current certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS, NIHSS
    • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
    • Experience working with both Pediatric and Adult patients in the Emergency Room setting
    • Pediatric ER experience

    Work Environment & Patient Population

    • Adult ER: 36 treatment areas; Pediatric ER: 12 treatment areas plus 8 fast track pods
    • Patient acuity ranges from minor walk-ins to critically ill (including respiratory failure, asthma, abdominal pain, fractures, substance abuse, occasional psych holds)
    • Adult ER is a STEMI, CVA, and burn receiving center
    • Pediatric ER is a designated pediatric receiving center
    • Nurse-to-patient ratios: ICU 1:2, Pediatric ER 1:4, Adult ER 1:4, procedural sedation 1:1
    • No separate psych/seclusion rooms
    • In-house security present

    Certifications & Skills

    • Must be proficient in basic and advanced cardiac life support and pediatric advanced life support
    • Familiarity with NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
    • Ability to interpret EKGs and participate in procedural sedation protocols
    • Experience with respiratory therapy equipment (ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow) and phlebotomy
    • Comfortable working with Cerner EMR system

    Scheduling & Shifts

    • 12-hour shifts: 7a-7p, 11a-11p, 3p-3a, 7p-7a
    • Night shift available
    • No block scheduling; flexibility required
    • Weekend requirement: 4 shifts per month (can be 1 per week or 2 every other week)
    • Holiday shifts expected unless on contracted time off
    • No call required; possible standby with 30-minute response time if called in

    Additional Information

    • No floating outside the ER department
    • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs; no hoodies, sweatshirts, or sweat jackets allowed
    • ER techs, CNAs, and LVNs support the unit; LVNs run fast track areas alongside RNs
    • Monitor techs handle telemetry monitoring; RNs read strips as needed
    • Some patient transport and imaging (X-ray, CT) available within ER

    This opportunity is ideal for ER nurses with solid pediatric and adult ER experience who have completed prior travel assignments and are comfortable in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
