Description
Registered Nurse – MICU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a 28-bed ICU split across two units (16 beds on MICU3 and 12 beds on MICU4)
- Patient population primarily with multi-system failure and co-morbid conditions such as sepsis, pneumonia, GI bleed, and organ failure
- Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients
- Night shift: 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Schedule includes every other weekend and every other holiday coverage
- Time off: 40 hours approved; no back-to-back weekends off; no time off around Labor Day
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience in Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
- Current ACLS certification
- Current BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
Background & Compliance Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required and must be carried during work hours
- 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days
- Education verification required; BSN preferred, ASN minimum if BSN not held
- Official transcript acceptable in lieu of diploma (photocopies not accepted)
- Fingerprinting required for certain units (Behavioral Health, Unit 5 East) with results prior to start
- Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check required for Behavioral Health and Unit 5 East candidates, processed within 45 days prior to start
- Proof of 2 clinical references required
- Completed employment application/resume required
- Skills checklist and competency exams must be updated annually
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, attesting ability to meet job demands
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (Tdap after age 11, no exemptions allowed)
- Negative TB screening: 2-step PPD within 1 year and 90 days of start or Qgold within 12 months (Tspot not accepted); chest x-ray if positive PPD or Qgold
- Annual TB questionnaire if past positive
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; no declinations/exemptions for measles
- Hepatitis B: Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required; if low/negative, Hep B Antigen titer also required within 6 months of start
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required; declination accepted but will not hold clearance
- Seasonal flu vaccination required annually during flu season (no exemptions)
- Drug screening: 10-panel urine drug screen including marijuana and fentanyl within 2 months of start, updated annually
Orientation & Facility Specifics
- Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions
- Professional appearance guidelines must be reviewed and acknowledged
- Fit testing required for patient-facing clinical roles, completed onsite if needed
- Release authorization, TB screening, and traveler compliance forms must be completed prior to start
- Latex allergy questionnaire required if applicable
Additional Notes
- Candidates must be able to work nights and follow the specified schedule
- Time off requests are limited and subject to approval based on facility policy
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
