Job Overview

  • Specialty: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)
  • Location: Phoenix, Arizona
  • Unit: Emergency Department / Trauma
  • Unit Size: Acute 36 beds, Subacute 54 beds, Trauma bays 6 (no travelers assigned here)
  • Patient Volume: Approximately 250-300 patients per day, 88,000 patients per year
  • Common Diagnoses: Trauma, burns; pediatric patients transferred out; includes care for psych holds (~30-40)
  • Shift: Evenings, 12-hour shifts (11am-11pm or 1pm-1am, varied start times)
  • Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4 weeks (unit discretion)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
  • Orientation: 2-3 shifts floor-specific orientation
  • Floating: Float within ER and between 4 facilities within ~30 minutes (main campus, Westgate, and 2 freestanding ERs)
  • Telemetry: Phillips monitors, ability to read cardiac strips required
  • Ventilator Management: Respiratory Therapists manage vents
  • In-House Support: Minimum 2 hospitalists or intensivists, midlevels, anesthesia, 24/7 RT and pharmacy coverage (pharmacist in ER 10 hrs/day)
  • Charge Nurses: 2 charge RNs with light patient load
  • Nurse Aides: 4 patient care technicians for sitter duties
  • Scrub Color: Navy

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of core ER nursing experience
  • At least 6 months of Level 1 Trauma experience
  • Previous travel experience required for Emergency Department or Neuro ICU
  • ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications required
    • Note: ENPC certification does NOT substitute for PALS
  • Cerner EMR experience required for Emergency Department
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to position acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
  • Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
  • Must complete SIMs Lab competency for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (ED exception: Foley and port-a-cath insertion only)
  • Must have own vehicle if part of travel teams
  • Must comply with appearance standards: no facial piercings, natural hair colors only, men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Must be off permanent staff at this health system for at least 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
  • Must not hold concurrent contracts with this health system

Contract Details

  • Minimum contract length: 13 weeks
  • Float policy allows working across multiple nearby facilities (4 total)
  • Weekly orientations held on Mondays (except holidays)
  • Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start
