Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
  • Hours per Week: 36 hours
  • Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:5 (may vary based on staffing)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-Call: Not applicable
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to like units or sister facilities as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience
  • Medical Surgical nursing experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Facility & Work Environment

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet Hospital
  • Total staffed beds: 820
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Uniform: Solid Royal Blue or White top with Royal Blue bottoms
  • Parking: Permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage parking; additional fees may apply for other locations

Scheduling & Hours

  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
  • Local radius for travel: 60 miles
  • Local candidates considered on a case-by-case basis

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • Includes SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
  • Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if verification pending
  • Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; NURSYS verification for RNs
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers (or all if fewer than 3)
  • Photo for Badge: Passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire, no hats or sunglasses
  • Radiation Badge: Required only for specific departments (not applicable for Medical Surgical RN)

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
  • TB Testing: Negative T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days of start; annual TB questionnaire required
  • Drug Screening: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed

Competency Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required as applicable
  • Competency exam required; pediatric OR candidates may use regular OR competency if no pediatric experience

Additional Notes

  • Travelers must complete facility-specific orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
  • All required certifications must be valid beyond 30 days from start date; expiring certifications must be renewed or scheduled for renewal before start
  • Facility allows floating between similar units to meet staffing needs
