Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Operating Room)
- Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
- On-call: Up to 4 call shifts per month (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Up to 1 weekend shift every 4 weeks (Saturday or Sunday, 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
- Holiday Requirement: Must work at least one holiday period (Christmas Dec 24–26, New Year’s Dec 31–Jan 1)
- Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including sister units
- Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
Facility Highlights
- Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet-designated hospital
- Main OR has 21 suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
- Nursing team: 75% RNs trained to scrub and circulate, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
- Charting system: EPIC
- Parking: $20 registration fee for garage hang tag; additional fees may apply for other parking locations
- Note: During hurricane season (June–November, peak Aug–Sept), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in South Carolina
- Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Radiation badge required
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License and Social Security Card
- Completed and accurate I-9 form with work eligibility attestation
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including:
- SSN Trace
- Statewide and national criminal checks
- Sex offender registry
- FACIS 3 and international searches if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder if verification pending
- Employment history verification for last 3 clinical employers
- Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Skills checklist updated annually for applicable units
- Radiation badge process must be completed before starting floor work
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam attesting ability to meet physical demands, updated annually
- Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+), renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days) or chest X-ray if prior positive
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
- Hepatitis B: titer, vaccine series, or declination form
- Drug screen: 10-panel urine test within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 – Mar 31), with documentation uploaded by December 5 deadline
Orientation & Facility Specifics
- Completion of orientation modules (approx. 2 hours) required before starting; must be done on a computer, not a phone
- First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay platform access provided after clearance
- Passport-style badge photo required before start (frontal view, solid light background, business casual attire)
- Must upload COVID and flu vaccination documentation into OurDay platform
- Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Local radius: 60 miles; local candidates considered case-by-case
Additional Notes
- Medication and pharmacology competency exams required as applicable
- Color blindness testing required prior to start
- Travelers should be prepared for possible emergency response duties during hurricane season
- Facility allows some flexibility but requires all required documentation and certifications to be current and valid at start
