Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 6 patients
- Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts every 4 weeks
- Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including between like units
- Unit Description:
- Digestive Disease Inpatient Units (21 beds) providing complex medical/surgical care for patients 17 years and older, including Bariatric and Autologous Islet Cell Programs
- Primary services include General Medical Hospitalist, Hepatology, and GI Surgery (Pancreobiliary, Bariatric, Surgical Oncology)
- Uses a modified modular nursing model to enhance teamwork
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in South Carolina
- Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Scheduling & Other Requirements
- Block scheduling may be accommodated with manager approval, depending on unit needs
- Local candidates accepted on a case-by-case basis within a 60-mile radius
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- During hurricane season (June–November), employees may be assigned to emergency response teams; travelers should consider this before accepting assignments during peak months (August and September)
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background Checks:
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years
- Includes SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers (or all if fewer than 3)
- Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology competency exam and general competency exam required
- Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
- Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
- Fit Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually (specific mask models required)
- Drug Screen: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days prior to start
- Immunizations & Titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or chest X-ray if positive history
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters accepted if low titer
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Seasonal Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Aug 1 – Mar 31); medical/religious exemptions accepted but declinations are not
- COVID-19 Vaccination: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed
- Radiation Badge: Not required for this position
Facility & Orientation
- Facility Type: Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet Hospital
- Charting System: EPIC
- Scrub Color: Solid Royal Blue or White top with Royal Blue bottoms
- Parking: Permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage use; additional fees may apply for other parking locations
- Orientation:
- Completion of online modules prior to start is mandatory; failure to complete results in being sent home
- Modules take approximately 2 hours and must be completed on a computer (not mobile)
- First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay platform used for document uploads and training
- Passport-style badge photo required before start
Additional Notes
- Travelers must upload COVID and flu vaccination documentation into the facility’s system
- Background or licensure issues may delay or prevent assignment
- Candidates with facial hair are encouraged to shave or provide their own PAPR for fit testing
- Facility reserves the right to approve candidates with more than 7 days of requested time off or holiday time off
