Overview

• 13-week assignment
• 12-hour night shifts
• 48-bed Med Surg RN department
• Location: Ottawa, Illinois

Required Qualifications

• Active IL license or confirmation that the application process has been initiated
• BLS
• ACLS
• At least 2 years of experience

Preferred

• PALS
• Previous travel experience

Unit Details

• Nurse-to-patient ratios: Days 1:5; Nights 1:6, usually starting at 1:5
• Nurse aids/patient care techs are on the unit, ratio 1:8-10
• RNs monitor tele strips
• Common patient types include medical acute cases such as pneumonia, heart failure, sepsis, COPD, urologic, surgical, total joints, general surgery, and occasional pediatric respiratory illness
• Bi-pap home regimen patients should be stable and alert; high-flow is used
• Charge nurse and Admin Supervisor are on the unit

Scheduling

• Shifts run 7:00am-7:30pm and 7:30pm-7:00am
• Lunch must be taken within the first 5 hours of the shift
• Staff are scheduled for a 30-minute uninterrupted break within the first 5 hours
• Scheduling is done through API
• Weekend requirement may include 4 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule
• Holiday requirement is every 3rd holiday
• Low census may result in 4-hour increments with re-evaluation every 4 hours

Floating

• May float to ICU for general acute overflow patients
• May float to Peru Campus to staff greatest need, with at least 2 hours’ notice before the shift if floating there

Additional Notes

• Solid-colored, tasteful scrubs; generally no prints
• Usually 3 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation
• Negative drug screen required for all panels
